it takes a lot more intelligence, cunning, and courage to fight vampires than to fight zombies. zombies just need dogged persistence and tenaciousness, which are indeed estimable qualities; but it takes real smarts to fight vampires.
i think i need to take a second to defend my position:
it definitely does take all of those qualities to fight vampires and zombies do only need dogged persistence and tenacity to be overcome, however that's exactly my point. Yes, if the world was attacked by vampires the survivors would probably be really smart and strong because that's the type of person it would take to kill an onslaught of vampires. But, that's why they're so scary. Only the smartest and strongest people can survive them. Given time and patience and food, anyone could survive a zombie attack.
people who are smart enough to successfully fight vampires are also smart enough, and ethical enough, to defend the poor and the weak. In fact people who fight vampires are simultaneously capable of fighting zombies as well, and even of triangling the vampires off against the zombies.
completely unrelated to your blog post (funny, by the way), but i just spoke to a man from germany who was raving about the christmas market in strasburg. please find a way to go if you're able to, and i can live vicariously through you. val, he said something about hot cinnamon red wine! egad. and hot cakes and buns and spices and laughter. it warms my heart just thinking about it. go!
Hi Valerie, this is Dad. You're completely right about the vampire/zombie thing. I see no evidence that zombies are impaired by cold or heat and although they are idiots they are also voracious and numerous. Vampires, by contrast, are almost selective epicures that, contrary to popular belief, are not that anxious to duplicate themselves and often take pains to remove the heads of their victims (thus insuring no new vampire) prior to carefully concealing them. More than that, vampires retain vestiges of their humanity (while zombies keep only a distorted similarity) and can still read, speak, reason, learn and even feel some human emotions. So that if you lose to a zombie you become a vile thing that only eats and fails to maintain even basic personal hygene, but if you become a vampire you can still think and dream, learn and discuss and at the same time develop stylishness that may have eluded you in life. Plus vampires have almost unlimited access to old castles and abbeys that are not choked with tourists (they may in fact be crucial in managing the flow of tourists) and get to listen to melancholy gypsy music while gliding under the full moon through the ruined battlements. Last of all vampires appear to possess a heightened appreciation of music, which is perhaps the most elevated of human achievements. So, you're right and your friend, who apparently only considers this issue from a military/defensive mode is wrong.
